Before clocks were invented people used sundials to tell the time. Thousands of years later they could still come in handy when you’re playing outdoors without a watch. Here’s how to make your own.
Step 1
Find a sunny spot with no shade. It's best to do this outside.
Step 2
Place your piece of paper on the floor in the middle of the spot.
Stand your stick or straw upright in the centre of the paper, using a blob of Blu Tack or plasticine to hold it up.
Step 3
Check your clock or watch. When it lands on the next hour (1 o’clock, 2 o’clock, 3 o’clock etc), draw a line with your pen along the shadow the straw or stick is making.
Step 4
Keep an eye on the time and draw a line every hour. Once you’ve marked them all, you’ll be able to tell the time depending where the shadow falls throughout the day.
Get rid of the clock or watch. You don’t need that anymore.*
