build a bird bath

It turns out that birds have to wash like the rest of us. So make life easier on them by setting up a bird bath. It won’t take long and if you place it somewhere they’ll feel safe, you should get some visitors. Don’t worry about leaving towels out. They prefer to drip dry.

Finish it off with steps up the outside of the container (a pile of rocks is perfect) then wait for your guests to arrive.

you’ll need:

a large plant pot

a wide, shallow bowl (or even an upturned frisbee)

some small stones

Step 1

Turn the plant pot upside down and place it on some flat ground with plants and shrubs nearby.

Step 2

Rest the bowl on top of the plant pot. Make sure it’s nice and steady. If you have any other raised area to put the bowl, that’s great – just make sure it’s not just sitting on the ground.

stones

Step 3

Add the small stones to the bottom of the bowl. This will give the birds some grip (they’re not great at swimming).

Step 4

Fill the bowl with water (rainwater is best).

Sit back and wait for your guests to fly by and drop in. Keep a note of who comes and goes.

Step 5

Clean out the bowl and fill it with fresh water from time to time. Don’t forget to keep it topped up in the warmer months.
