a very special delivery

The lovely Elaine and her mum popped in to fruit towers yesterday to deliver Elaine's contribution to this year's Big knit - a whopping one thousand hats. We were busy knitting away at lunchtime when our needle work was blown out of the water by the sheer magnitude of Elaine's efforts. It took her a year and every one of them is perfect. She knits whilst watching the telly and doesn't even need to look at what she's doing. Needless to say we were in awe.

the big knit - purl of fame #1

The Purl of Fame – best of the Big Knit - #1 Herbert Hoodie

Allow us to introduce Herbert Hoodie knitted by the marvellous Rachel Phillips. Herbert stormed to victory as a hat of the week in September 2009. Rachel, you have our undying admiration and a place in the coveted Purl of Fame.

National Shed Week

This week has been national shed week. So, whether it’s husband, Dad or Grandpa that spends their man-time in a wooden hideaway at the bottom of the garden, this might explain why you haven't seen them for a little while.

If you happen to be one of these shed-dwelling males, then it’s worth noting that this is a nationally recognized week for doing what you do best (as if you needed an excuse).

Alternatively, if you’re looking to spend more time organizing nuts and bolts into specific compartments or really want to get into the specifics of carving doll house miniatures, this is the week to start making plans. We’ve found a few sheds that we hope will provide the inspiration you need to establish your very own timber-framed utopia.

- This fantasy shed is for the more artsy dweller. We’re not absolutely certain that the floors are level so perhaps not ideal for precision woodwork.

- Alex Holland’s ‘Man Shed’ is made from a boat & seems to be solar powered. Very fancy indeed.

- If you’re looking for an on-the-go shed or can’t bear to leave yours when visiting relatives, we recommend the Shed tent.

- The Water Shed is perfect for beach holidays and fishing trips.

And we’ll leave you with the Tetra Shed. This award winning modular building system (shed) is quite possibly the shed of the future.

Kirsty's apple

The shade of this apple's leaf has led to some interesting sunburn. Nice work nature.

our new roof garden

We had a bit of a treat at the end of last week when Mike from Rocket Gardens came in to help us set up a veggie patch on the roof of fruit towers. It's something we've wanted to do for a while now and our Janel was amazing in getting everything ready for our very own office Eden. As you can see Janel is pretty excited that it all came together.

Here's Mike from Rocket Gardens with a bag of his trusty worm cast. Great for courgettes he tells us. Mike grew all the seedlings we planted and even knocked up the flowerbeds. Thank you Mike, you're the best. His wife was ready to give birth at any point too, so we hope he got back home in time.

The produce is looking good enough to eat already, although perhaps a little more patience is needed.

Mike also wouldn't tell us what one of the plants was. We're all pretty keen to find out, although if you can tell from the picture please don't let us know as we all like a good surprise.
