Meet the Knitters: Wendy and the Knit & Natter group at Age UK Devon

We were absolutely blown away this week when the lovely Wendy got in touch to say that her Knit & Natter group at Age UK Devon had made a whopping 20,000 hats for the Big Knit this year. That is the largest total we have ever heard of and our minds were well and truly boggled. We got back in touch with Wendy to find out a bit more about the group behind the hats.

We found out that there are twenty five people who regularly attend the Knit & Natter groups but not everyone knits - some just come because they know they will find warmth and friendship, plenty of chat and a good cuppa. Sometimes there's even cake.

The knitters make all sorts of things; little jackets for the local premature baby unit as well as bedsocks, scarves, mittens and other ‘keep warm’ items (most of which are given away in their local community).

And, of course, they also make little hats. The Big Knit is one of their favourite projects and keeps everyone knitting throughout the year.

We hope they'll be patting themselves on the back for some time to come because their hard work is going to make a massive difference to this year’s campaign. We bow down to you, Knit & Natter group of Age UK Devon. You are the greatest.

the big knit 2014

It's big. It's woolly. It's back.

It's the Big Knit 2014

Knit a hat, send it to us, we'll put it on a smoothie, someone will buy the smoothie and 25p from every bottle will go straight to Age UK to help keep older people warm in winter. Bingo*.

Everything you need to know about it (how to get involved, patterns and other lovely stuff) is on our very special Big Knit page here or watch our ad below:

So, if you fancy getting involved by knitting us a hat (or two, or three, or 5000 maybe, just a suggestion) then pop them in an envelope along with a note clearly stating:

  • how many you've knitted
  • the date, your name and address

Then send them all through by 12th December 2014 to:

And, if you can't knit, never fear – you can get involved by texting ‘Knit’ to 70004 to donate £3 towards the campaign.

Happy knitting (/texting).
