Blueberry

The first time I heard of blueberries, they were in a pancake at the Little Chef. Since then they have become a very popular and fashionable fruit, seen in all the right circles.

They are mostly thought of as an American fruit, which is good, as they are. The blueberry belongs to the genus Vaccinium, with North America being the world's leading producer, accounting for nearly 90% of world production at the present time. Blueberries are harvested from mid-April until early October, with peak harvest in July which is also known as National Blueberry Month. Crazy.

Elizabeth White

how do you domesticate berries?

There are a couple of people we have to thank for the blueberry as we know it - Elizabeth White and Dr. Frederick Coville domesticated the wild blueberry in the early 1900s. How do you domesticate berries? A few kind words (with discipline where needed) should suffice.

Without Liz and Fred's potty training, the people from Marshall County would have very boring summers. Marshall County Blueberry Festival is held from August 31-September 3 2001 in Plymouth, Indiana. From the looks of their website, you can do the Blueberry Stomp, watch some Beatles impersonators and look at hot air balloons. Very nice.

Hammonton baseball club

Beloved of Americans but not played nor understood by anyone else*, baseball is the quintessential symbol of all that's good about America. Dad wolfs down his hot dog whilst simultaneously attempting to scream instructions to little Johnny through the wire fence, thus drooling mustard down his "Vote Dubya" t-shirt.

Johnny is embarrassed by Pop's yelling and drops the crucial catch during the bottom of the ninth (I know what I'm talking about), thus sentencing the team to another losing season.

But this doesn't happen in Hammonton, where the Blueberries represent the local people with pride. And they've got a nice kit/uniform too.

A blueberry in a top hat. Stylish

the best detox fruit around

Baseball and old bush-hiding ladies aside, blueberries are very good for you. They are low in calories, virtually fat free, a good source of fibre, and now found to be high in antioxidants.

According to research underway at the USDA Human Nutrition Research Center on Aging at Tufts University, blueberries top the list of some 40 fruits, juices, and vegetables in their antioxidant activity. So they are the best detox fruit around.

This basically means that you can keep "living on the edge", but as long as you grab a handful of blueberries in the morning you should be OK, just like TV's hard-drinking, fast-living, blouson-wearing Dex Dexter. (NB The man who played Dex on telly was recently arrested for some kind of drug-dealing. How the mighty have fallen.)

*OK, so people in Cuba and Japan are into it too.

Down a quart of bourbon, put the collars of your leather jacket up and send your fruit inspiration to us in the good ol' Dex Dexter style, to fruitcorner@innocentdrinks.co.uk
