how do you solve a problem like smelly trainers?

smelly trainers

It's been a bit warm recently so we've ventured out in our trainers without wearing any socks. Big mistake. Now they stink. But we're not going to panic, because our friends at Friends of the Earth have told us that if we sprinkle a bit of bicarbonate of soda inside them tonight, they won't smell half as bad by morning. Bingo.

picked up our son from a campsite in Wales to take him back to Yorkshire. His trainers were grim! The smell was overpowering! It was Friday and the traffic was dreadful! Just couldn't do three hours of that, so stuck shower gel in them (he'd got PLENTY left over!!) When we got home, just put them in a bucket of hot water and they came out smelling of lemon and lime!!

Put them in a plastic bag and pop them in the freezer for 48 hours. It kills all the bacteria off that cause the smell.

Cuticura talc. Sweet like a baby

Washing machine with biological washing detergent on a low heat and then air dry.
OR bicarbonate of soda sprinkle in and leave it should absorb moisture and smells

Apparently if you put them in the freezer (in a plastic bag, obvs) it kills all the bacteria and they don't smell anymore also!

Ta da! Boom!

I'll Shut.Up. now

Please god will somebody see what I did there...

Walnut leaves

Drop em in the recycling bin for Air Ambulance ........ Boxes in different towns covering different Air Ambulances ......................

fabric sofener sheets left in overnight .....maybe newspaper to keep airtightish? ....good times

Colloidal (or Active) silver sprayed inside - it kills the bacteria that cause the smell.

Ali I saw what you did and it made me chuckle! My hubby says you need to hang them outside teh wndow until they are dead and then buy new ones!!!!!

works on the fridge too when husband has been storing his smelly cheese in there.

Bare feet - sorted!! (or maybe a supply of clothes pegs for friends 'n' family?)

Ali, we saw what you did there. Nice.

ha ha love it - a common problem for runners (running shoes have a terrible smell like cat wee once they've worked up a sweat and/or got wet.
Bicarb does work well. But don't wash running shoes in a machine - it ruins them! Just take out the insoles, attend to with the bicarb and leave to dry. Then rinse the trainers with warm water, get rid of excess water, stuff with newspaper and pop into a warm place to dry.
You might still have to put bicarb into the (once dried) trainers as well though.
Good luck!

Yup, signed up. Beautiful world...I'll keep you posted if I come up with anything.

Beware of the bicarb. It will eat holes in your feet if you use too much.
